The Federal Trade Commision ranks Credit Card Fraud as #3 in their top ten of Consumer complaints.

The FTC Identifies a typical Credit Card Fraud scam scenario like this:

Credit Card Fraud

The Bait: Surf the Internet and view adult images online for free, just for sharing your credit card number to prove you're over 18.
The Catch: Consumers say that fraudulent promoters have used their credit card numbers to run up charges on their cards.
The Safety Net: Share credit card information only when buying from a company you trust. Dispute unauthorized charges on your credit card bill by complaining to the bank that issued the card. Federal law limits your liability to $50 in charges if your card is misused.

Consumers need to be vigilant and wary when using credit cards online and at various consumer outlets. Here is a quick start guide to using your credit card cautiously and wisely.

-Always make sure that the website has "https" as a prefix before placing an order. This prevents your information from being transmitted over the internet "in the clear". "HTTPS" encrypts your personal (and credit card) data before it goes over the internet to the intended destination.

-Look for and pay attention to the "lock" sign on your web browser that indicates the site you are connected to is indeed a secure site. This implies the encryption mentioned above.
